Mark's Biography

As a teacher, City Councilmember, and as Manhattan Borough President – Mark Levine has made a real positive impact in our communities. In the City Council, Mark helped pass landmark protections including the nation’s first Right to Counsel law to protect tenants from eviction, and chaired the Committee on Health to help lead New York City out of the COVID-19 pandemic. As Borough President, Mark dedicated his office to tackling Manhattan’s affordability crisis. He identified tens of thousands of new units of housing, pushed for initiatives that created more affordable units, and supported policies to help tenants stay in their own homes.

Now, Mark is running for Comptroller to continue fighting for our communities, and protect New York City from Donald Trump and the MAGA agenda.

Mark on the Issues

Addressing the housing crisis

Mark knows full well that every New Yorker deserves to be able to afford to live and work in our city. He’s led the fight as Borough President and on the Council for affordability, helping pass landmark tenant protections including Right to Counsel. As Comptroller, Mark will invest $2.5 billion to build or preserve 75,000 affordable homes, to ensure that we can address our housing crisis head-on.

Improving public safety

New Yorkers deserve streets that are safe for all. That’s why Mark will work tirelessly to address the mental health crisis as he'll expand inpatient psychiatric beds, invest in mobile treatment programs, and create better pay for mental health workers. He’ll also push to ensure that the current 3,000 NYPD vacancies are filled, so our public safety officers can effectively utilize community policing strategies to keep us safe.

Access to high-quality education

As a former bilingual math and science teacher, Mark has the firsthand experience to know how important a quality education is. As Comptroller, Mark will ensure that our children are protected from the harmful policies of the Trump administration. He’ll fight back against harmful federal budget cuts to our schools, push for smaller class sizes, and expand early childhood care to strenghten our education system.
