Eddie's Biography
Assemblymember Eddie Gibbs, hailing from East Harlem, made history in 2022 by becoming the first formerly incarcerated individual elected to New York’s State Legislature. Raised in poverty by a single mother, Gibbs faced challenges early on, including incarceration from an act of self-defense. Despite this, he obtained his GED and an Associate’s degree while in prison. Returning to his community, he pursued comedy and activism, founding the East Harlem Democratic Club in 2018. Gibbs is deeply involved in community initiatives, organizing coat drives, Thanksgiving dinners, and back-to-school drives. In office, he has delivered real results, helping secure $15 million to make the M116 Bus free and millions of dollars for senior services, and helped pass the first housing bill in years to increase affordability.
A dedicated father and grandfather, Gibbs brings a unique perspective to Albany, driven by his commitment to social justice and community welfare.
