Jim headshotJim Gaughran is the only candidate with the accomplished record of fiscal responsibility to represent Long Island in the State Senate’s 5th district. Jim has been a distinguished member of the Suffolk County Legislature since 1987 and was the youngest Councilman in Huntington’s history at the age of 26. Jim is a strong proponent of enacting laws to defend New Yorkers from gun violence, protecting taxpayers hit by the Trump tax plan, holding corrupt politicians accountable, and is fighting for funding for public schools in the district.

In the State Senate, Jim will:

PROTECT OUR ENVIRONMENT. As a Suffolk County Legislator, Jim co-sponsored the Suffolk Water Protection Act which led to preserving the Central Pine Barrens and numerous critical watershed areas in Suffolk County.

PROTECT OUR TAX DOLLARS. As Water Authority Chairman, Jim implemented smart management practices which have reduce the payroll in 4 years by 6%, resulting in the Authority having a prime bond rating of AAA issued by both Fitch and Standard and Poors. He also implemented numerous reforms to create accountability and transparency.

PROTECT OUR FAMILIES BY HELPING LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT CRACK DOWN ON THE VIOLENT GANG MS-13. Jim co-sponsored the County’s first “crack house” law against drug dealers and as Chair of the Public Safety Committee he reformed the Suffolk County Police Department with new community-oriented police policies.
